The art scene in Minneapolis is exploding as area art institutions expand and improve. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, one the top ten art museums in the U.S., features a collection of over 100,000 art exhibits from paintings by the masters to sculpture, crafts, photography, prints and textiles spanning over 5,000 years in world history. The new Walker Art Center showcases contemporary, visual, performance, film and media artists. The multi-use center also boasts a state-of-the-art theater, the largest contemporary art gallery in the region, interactive educational lounges and an 11-acre sculpture garden. The Weisman Art Museum, affiliated with the University of Minnesota, offers an on-going series of exhibits and a permanent collection by early 20th century American artists such as Marsden Hartley and Georgia O’Keefe. And, the Museum of Russian Art is the only North American museum dedicated solely to Russian art from the Soviet period. Hint: Park the car and hop on the RiverCity Trolley for a narrated historical tour of Minneapolis that includes stops at area art museums. Hop-off and enjoy the exhibits; hop-on the next trolley and continue exploring the city.
